As many of you know, we had an incident at the fair this morning. The following is the official statement we have provided to all media outlets (Channels 3 & 5, The Canton Repository, WHBC, and others).
At approximately 6:00 AM this morning (1/14/2019), someone (not the Owner) released fifteen (15) race horses from a barn at the Stark County Fair. An alleged suspect has been taken into custody of the Canton City Police Department. Fourteen (14) of the horses were caught in the surrounding neighborhood and safely taken back to the fair grounds and put in the barn. They are being observed and checked out by their owners, trainers and veterinarian. Unfortunately, one (1) horse was found in Meyers Lake and despite best efforts of the Canton PD and Local Fire Department to save the horse, the horse died at approximately 8:50 AM. The Stark County Fair Board expresses our deepest sympathies to the owner of the horse and all who have been effected by this tragic incident. We also extend our sincerest appreciation to the Canton City and Perry Twp Fire Departments, as well as to all the local Fire departments for coordinating all the rescue and recovery efforts. We are also very grateful to all the volunteers from our Community who helped control this situation all morning. At this point, we have no further information about the person in custody or the well-being of the remaining horses.
